Heartlands Hospital
Overview
The Heartlands Treatment Centre (HTC) at Heartlands Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility in Birmingham which has brought together a range of vital services under one roof. The four-storey building spans across an internal footprint of 18,000sqm and has been built to provide treatment to up to 1,500 patients every day.
Rockpanel mineral fibre cladding was specified by architects Design Buro for the facade due to its A2 fire rating, easy installation and versatility. SBS Cladding worked with RLW Roofing to supply the Rockpanel cladding alongside rainscreen insulation, fire barriers and fixings to the site, which was managed by main contractors Kier Group.
Concept to completion
In 2019, University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) NHS Foundation Trust received a £97m investment from the Department of Health and Social Care to create new facilities and improve their healthcare services at Heartlands Hospital. With the new building located right next to the hospital’s emergency department and main car park, it was important that the construction project caused minimal disruption to the existing hospital buildings, staff and patients.
Rockpanel cladding offered a quick installation process, which was a key requirement on a live hospital site. This was especially crucial given the project’s scale, with 3,500sqm of Rockpanel installed on the building in three different colours and varying sizes, to accentuate the scale of the build. The cladding was selected from the Metals range, with a metallic finish providing a close visual match to other buildings on site.
On a facade of such a large scale, it was advantageous to use a cladding material that could offer durability, weather resistance and low maintenance requirements. These are all benefits that Rockpanel was able to offer, making it a suitable choice for this project.
Completed in 2023, the Heartlands Treatment Centre is a spacious and modern facility which benefits patients, staff and the wider community. The Rockpanel cladding, which shimmers across the facade, creates a contemporary finish and makes the building easily identifiable on site.
