Basildon and Thurrock Hospital
Overview
Basildon and Thurrock Hospital sits on the outskirts of Basildon, Essex and was built in 1973 to provide services for people living in the south west of Essex. This extension project, designed by architects Bowman Riley, proposed to create a new entrance way to the hospital with the addition of a new 2- storey building in front of the existing entrance.
SBS Cladding worked alongside cladding installers RKC Industrial Roofing and Cladding to supply Genius metal cladding, colour matched fixings and an NVELOPE framing system to the project which was managed by contractors noviniti.
Concept to completion
The previous main entrance to the hospital was not immediately visible on approach, as it was covered by a raised landscaped area. It was therefore important to clients, Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, that the new building created a welcoming entrance way that was easy for new visitors to the hospital to find. The architects cleverly designed the building to use a mix of ceramic and metal cladding to draw visitors towards the entrance. By setting the ceramic cladding at an angle, architectural interest was achieved, whilst guiding visitors to their destination.
The Genius metal cladding was selected in a copper colour to contrast with the ceramic cladding, both in colour and texture. To blend the fixings for the metal cladding into the panels, colour matched fixings manufactured by Mainline were also supplied to the project. The cladding was installed onto the NV1 Nvelope framing system, also supplied by SBS Cladding.
The addition of the new entrance building has assisted in greatly improving visitor experience for both patients and staff, by increasing the range of facilities available, including a new bereavement suite, multi-faith room and administration office. The contemporary facade of the building has also improved wayfinding for visitors of the hospital and created an eye-catching architectural focus to the mainly 1970s style site.
